Fall 2014
Some things to do for Fall 2014
Ahh…that fresh, crisp autumn air! Breathe it in! Now that summer has officially ended, I can go outside and enjoy what DC has to offer again! That’s right, no more humid, mid-90’s days. It’s shifting over to the much preferred mid-50’s with that lovely breeze. It’s also the time to see the leaves change, join in the fun at many of the festivals and Oktoberfest happenings around town, wander out to the mountains, go apple picking, and a whole array of other activities.
Fall is my favorite season of all. That’s for sure! Fall 2014 in DC however…well, that’s just magical. I’ll go over a bit of the happenings that occur during Fall in DC.
Oktoberfests: There are some great Oktoberfests that happen around Washington, DC this time of year. For instance the Biergarten Haus (1355 H St. NE, Washington, DC) has a great one that runs from September 20th all the way through to October 31st this year. They’ll have live music, great beer and other drinks, and good food. The DC Armory (2001 East Capitol St. NE, Washington, DC) has a big one called “Das Best Oktoberfest” where they will have over 150 unique beers, German wines, schnapps, bratwurst, and many other great German foods. They also have live music. It’s only a $40 admission. This is going down on September 27th. There are many others, but I just wanted to give you two of my favorite.
Apple Picking: One of my very favorite things to do during Fall in DC is head on out to the orchard to pick some apples. They’re juicy and delicious around this time of the year. One of my favorite places to go is Stribling Orchard. It’s a straight shot down I-66, and very easy to get to. I’ve been going there for years and it’s always a blast. They make some of the freshest pies this side of the Mississippi and all kinds of jams. Very cool experience. Bring your friends/family along and have a picnic in the orchard. They have some great pumpkins too…oh! And a petting zoo!
The Maryland Renaissance Festival: Talk about some merry times! This is another of my yearly traditions and it’s always a great time. The Maryland Renaissance Festival has been going on for a long time (at least a couple of decades) and is a huge celebration of most things Renaissance. Great food, people dressed up in armor and nobles clothing, jousting, sword shops, glass blowing, archery, and drinking. All around merriment for all!
Taste of DC: Another great Fall in DC tradition: the Taste of DC. This event features tastings and dishes from over 80 of the best restaurants, food trucks, and eateries. As well as a Farm-to-Fork zone. You’ll also get to rub elbows with some of the best chefs and wine makers in the area.
Boo at the Zoo: This Halloween celebration that the National Zoo puts on is a wonderful family event. With over 40 treat stations, animal demonstrations, animal keeper chats, and decorated walkways, it’s fun for the whole family. See the National Zoo’s bats, creepy-crawlies and owls to get you ready for Halloween! This year it runs from the 24th of October to the 26th.
Mount Vernon’s Wine Festival and Sunset Tours: See George Washington’s estate and garden in all it’s splendor! Enjoy live blues and the beautiful views of the Potomac River while sampling wine from 17 different Virginia wineries. You’ll get to tour the wine cellars where George Washington use to store his own wine. You can go to this website for more information and ticketing.
Well, as you can see Fall 2014 in DC is filled with fun and exciting things to do. There are loads more goings-on than I listed here so keep your eyes and ears peeled for more events like the above. I hope I helped fill a couple weekends up for you!
Be sure to go out there and enjoy what Fall 2014 in DC has in store for you!
Stay healthy my friends (and have fun this Autumn!)
