February in DC

February in DC, this is what’s going on…

Mid winter in DC is a bit cold. BUT! There are a lot of great goings-on in the area. I’m going to break down some great activities that are at your disposal in February so that, just maybe, we can all think of something other than the temperature.

Here are some of my favorite things to do in February in DC:

  • THE SUPERBOWL! – I don’t know if you knew this but The Superbowl is a pretty big deal in the Nations Capital (well, everywhere, really), and there are some venues around town that take watching The Superbowl to a whole new level. For instance, The Jack Rose Dining Saloon will be pitting two barbecue styles and two breweries against each other. Also, for just $10 a plate, people watching the game can choose between “Carolina Gold” Chicken BBQ with yellow mustard sauce & jalapeno cornbread or “Kansas City Red” Pulled Pork BBQ, and for just $5 a beer, beer connoisseurs can taste 3 Stars’ Nectar of the Bogs Cranberry Saison and Flying Dog’s In-Heat Wheat Hefeweizen, or 3 Stars’ Millstone Brandy-Lyn and Flying Dog’s collaboration with Jack Rose, their Double Barrel Horn Dog. As an added benefit, NFL fans can watch and cheer for their favorite team on Jack Rose’s heated rooftop terrace with three BIG flat-screen TVs. If you’re on the other side of the Potomac, The Arlington Draft House will be showing the game on their BIG screen (like movie-theater-sized). It’s going to be free admission and you can also get regular table side service, with a full restaurant menu and bar service. Talk about fun for February in DC!
  • The Chocolate Lovers Festival 2015 – This is actually the first time hearing about this, which is odd, as I’ve lived in this area for over 20 years. But if you like chocolate, you shouldn’t miss it. It’s a two day festival starting on February 7th through to the 8th. You’ll be able to enjoy an arts contest that features art made completely of (you guessed it) chocolate, samples from chocolate vendors, craft shows and more. I think it would make for a great Valentine’s Day date.
  • President’s Day Weekend 2015 – President’s Day Weekend is always an awesome time to go exploring and checking out events in the city. At noon on February 12th of 2015, at the Lincoln Memorial, you’ll get to see the Presidential wreath laying ceremony and a dramatic reading of the Gettysburg Address. February 16th you could witness the largest President’s Day parade in the nation. This is held in Old Town Alexandria, where George Washington once walked. Old Town is also a really great area to explore with many great restaurants and local shops. On February 14-16, 2015 you can celebrate George Washington’s birthday. Three packed days of special events at George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens. President’s Day Weekend is also a great time just to explore the 500-acre estate and learn about the life of the first president of the United States.
  • Revolutionary War Reenactment – On February 15, 2015 at the Fort Ward Museum (4301 W. Braddock Road, in Alexandria, Virginia), you’ll be able to watch a reenactment of a Revolutionary War skirmish between the “Redcoats” and the Colonials.

These are just some of the great festivals and activities that are happening in the month of February in DC. Washington, DC and the surrounding area is a great place to explore, and that doesn’t only mean “in the Summer.” Winter fun is available, go out and enjoy!

Stay healthy my friends.
