Summer in the City: Part Two
Outdoor Movies!
One of my all time favorite things to do in Washington, DC is to watch movies outside in the summer time. It’s awesome, and (usually) it’s FREE! The showings are all over town and the movies are usually classics. That’s Casablanca in the photo I took above, as an example. You can bring food and drink to many venues, which just makes the whole experience that much more enjoyable. Without further ado, let me give you the skinny on what’s available and when, around town this summer.
Screen on the Green – Screen on the Green is pretty famous. I mean, you get to watch movies ON the National Mall. That’s pretty amazing. From what I’ve seen of the movies, they are mostly classics, and mostly family friendly. The showings this year range from July 21st-August 11th of 2014.
Films at the Stone – I’ve not personally gone to this venue for film showings, but it is a great location. It’s right along the Tidal Basin and is usually a very beautiful area. Not to mention you can also get a chance (if you haven’t) to check out the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. There are some powerful films showing this year. The films are spread out over June, July and August. Click the link above for the movies and their show times.
Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival – Located in a park right near the border of Washington, DC in Arlington (Rosslyn), the Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival always is a “must attend”. Great movies, and great fun. The movies are spread across the movie rating spectrum, so they are not always family friendly. It is accessible by Metro. If you don’t mind the walk, you can also reach the park from a short walk over Key Bridge from Georgetown. The films show every Friday. As of this writing, I’m a little late on informing you, as two films have already been shown, but fear not, you still have another 10 films at this venue.
NoMa Summer Screen – The NoMa BID (North of Mass. Ave.) hosts this Summer film festival every year. This year’s theme is “Unlikely Friendships” and what a great line-up it is! It runs from May 28th to August 20th this year, and is located on L St. between 2nd and 3rd St. NE. This venue is particularly neat because they also have music, guests, and BBQ!
Capitol Riverfront Summer Outdoor Movies – Trivia. Hula hooping. Wii on a big screen, and great sports movies. This is what you should expect when going to the Capitol Riverfront Summer Outdoor Movies, located only about a block away from National’s Park and also accessible front the Navy Yard Metro station, this venue is a great choice for outdoor movies. Movies run from June 5th to September 4th, at 8:45 pm every Thursday. Check out the link above to see movies and times.
These are just a few of the many options to choose from. They are a great experience and in my opinion, it wouldn’t really be summer unless I went to at least a couple of them.
Most of these locations allow you to picnic (bring your own food and drinks) so keep that in mind and add that as part of your experience; a picnic outdoors with your friend/s or S/O, watching classic (or new) movies, in a park, in the Nation’s Capital. It’s a pretty neat thing.
I hope I gave you some more ideas of what to do this summer in this beautiful city. There will be more to come this week!
Stay healthy my friends!
