Summer in DC 2015
So many activities! Summer in DC 2015
Washington, DC comes even more alive than it already is when summer roles around. With such a vast amount of activities and events to choose from during the summer, there’s seemingly always something to do. Festivals, outdoor movies and music, pick-up games of volley ball and other sports, and an array of other activities pull us up and out on the town. As is becoming tradition, I wanted to let you, dear reader, know about some of the activities taking place during summer in DC 2015, and where and when they’ll be taking place. Many are free to attend, and all are loads of fun! I’ll try not to make the list too long, but there’s a lot to cover!
Festivals!
There are many great festivals around DC every summer. Here’s a rundown of what they are and where you can find them:
The DC Jazz Festival – If you’re a lover of good music, DC is the place to be! Thousands of music-loving individuals run to the nation’s capital to come to the annual DC Jazz Festival every year. It runs, this year, from the 10 to the 16th of June, and is in it’s 11th year now. There’s over 120 different performances that span dozens of different venues throughout the city over these 6 days. There are 4 Main Stages to attend, but those are just the main stages. There are many, many different venues. The lineup is massive too, from Grammy award winning artists to up-and-comers. There’s a broad spectrum of musicians, ready to play some good music, starting on the 10th of June. Find out more here.
The Source Festival – “The Source Festival is Washington’s source for new work.” This aptly named festival takes rising, talented performers and puts them on the stage with already established artists. The festival is a creative, inventive, and collaborative effort to pave the way for the next generation of great performing artists. It takes place over a 3 week period, beginning on June 5th, and boasts 25 new pieces of amazingly creative work. Tickets range from $20 for basic access to $100 for full. With varying levels between. Check it out here.
The Smithsonian Folklife Festival – Summer in DC 2015 is packed with wonderful things, as you are now becoming aware of (unless you knew this all already). One of these wonderful things is one of my personal favorites: The Smithsonian Folklife festival. It’s an engaging, educational, enlightening and all around fun time! This year it starts on the 24th of June and goes to 28th, then a short break, and it starts again on the 1st of July, running through to the 5th. For this year’s festival Peru is the cultural focus (it changes year to year). Visitors attending will get to experience some of this culture through cooking and craft demonstrations, music and dance performances, discussions, ritual and celebratory processions, among other events. The Safeway Barbecue Battle – This will be the 23rd year that we, in Washington,DC, have the delicious opportunity of attending one of the most mouth watering battles in out metro area. It’s starts on Saturday the 27th of June (11:00AM kickoff for the festivities), and goes on through the weekend. Because words can’t really adequately describe it, here’s a…taste…of what you can experience:
As you can see, there is a lot of fun, and food, to be had. 30 bands will be playing this year, on 3 different stages. There’s a sampling tent. Meet and greet with some of the best BBQ pros in the nation. Recipes…and so much more! Tickets to this range from $12 for a one day pass, all the way up to the $75 VIP ticket, which boasts some awesome perks: “…good on both 6/27 & 6/28, 2015 and includes Admission for Both Days, Access to VIP Hospitality Area with Food & Beverages, BBQ Battle Apron and a BBQ Goodie Bag.
